Independent Projects

Students enjoy independent projects! I recommend trying out a few independent projects with your students!

I have included a few suggestions below for projects. I would love to see projects your students complete! Feel free to send them to me at historywithmrst@gmail.com !

Project A

Pick a picture from the home page of this website and imagine yourself in the situation.

  • Describe the photograph. Be sure to describe the people, the place, what is happening, and any other relevant details.

Choose one of the following and write about it:

  • Write a paragraph about what you imagine happened before this photograph was taken. I want to hear what you think. How did this situation arise?
  • Imagine you are the photographer. Why did you decide to take a photograph in this moment? What was so important about this that it needed to be shared?
  • Write a paragraph about what you imagine happened after this photograph was taken. Why do you think that happened?
  • Pick one of the people in the photograph. Write about what you are thinking during this situation. Are you angry, happy, frustrated etc? What do you think about the other people in the photograph? How do you feel about this situation?

Suggested Modification/Accommodation: You could have your student complete more or less prompts. You could have your student tell you in words, rather than in writing, their answer.

Project B

You will be creating a video about a historical topic of your choice. You may choose any topic in American history. You may pick the history of anything.

1. Decide on a historical topic you would like to cover.

2. Decide on a genre.

You may choose to create a trailer, PSA, or another type of video. Your theme should be in line with the topic area. If it is a solemn topic, please be respectful of the subject matter.

3. Create a storyboard for your video. A storyboard shows how the story will unfold, showing the specific plot points in the story.

4. I will upload additional instructions about how you can create a video in the next few weeks. There are tutorials on YouTube that can help.

5. Create a two paragraph explanation of your video and how it connects to the historical figure or event you have chosen.

Please check out the instructions posted here.

Project C

Create your own "Day in History"

Pick an event that happened over the past few weeks in United States or World History and draft a paragraph about it to be included in our class guide. I will post all appropriate responses that are sent to me by parents at on a page on this website.  You can send me projects at historywithmrst@gmail.com

  1. Include the date, place, and people involved.
  2. Write two sentences explaining the event in simple words.
  3. Include an image that can be used in our class guide. I encourage you to draw or paint your own image. However, if you decide to find an image online make sure to cite your source!
  4. Include an additional resource (online) where others can learn more. Make sure it is a source that we can trust (not Wikipedia).

Project D

Create your own family tree.

We are all spending a lot of time at home with our families. This might be a great time to learn more about your relatives. After asking my parents some questions I learned that one of my grandparents fought in Italy during WWII! Note: Your family is your own definition, change your tree to fit what family means to you. You can send me projects at historywithmrst@gmail.com

  1. Your family tree starts with you at the bottom.
  2. Draw a tree starting with your name and an interesting fact about you. See the image below for an example. Feel free to customize it to fit your family!
  3. Above you are your parents. Write down your parent's names and an interesting fact about them. You can certainly include your stepparents in addition to/instead.
  4. Above your parents are your grandparents. These are your parents' parents. Write the names of your parents' parents and an interesting fact about them. Ask your parents if they know a fun fact about their parents if you do not know much about them!
  5. Keep going back as far as you can.
